Ever hear of Google Earth? I read an article about it awhile back and thought I'd see what the fuss was about. It's really pretty amazing to have this kind of technology available for free!Anyway, I've visited and revisited place after place...checking out Washington DC, Beverly Hills, CA (man, they've got a lot of swimming pools), various places in Poland (terrible picture resolution), the Mall of America, the DFW area, and maybe some more. But the place I continue to return to is home. You know, I always said that as soon as I could I'd get out of St. Louis...that Missouri was more like Misery...that I'd had enough. But I keep going back with this software.
The picture attached to this post is actually where I grew up. Seeing it, I was immediately flooded with memories...playing in the tree in front of our house, my friends that lived two houses down, playing baseball and football in the big field behind our houses (top-right of picture), getting into fights, and of course being with my whole family before the divorce occurred.
I miss home. I miss family and friends. Can you believe it's been 2 1/2 years since we've set foot in the U.S.? And it will be another year + before that happens. I find myself craving home...the smells, the tastes (oh, Spring Creek and BlueBell...where are you now?), the choices, the bigness, the language, and obviously people. We can't wait to get home and see everyone and to live in our culture for a little while.
It's interesting to me how we can get so comfortable, we can learn the language, start living out the cultural norms, accept the people...everything...yet still we yearn for home. There are so many spiritual implications in that aren't there? Boy, what I'd give for a Google Heaven!!

I like the Google Heaven idea! My Internet connection here in Poznan is pretty good, but I don't think it could come close to handling that.
My latest Google Earth location search was far from home. I went to the Chernobyl nuclear plant disaster site. Last weekend, we spent some time with some Ukrainians and heard their personal stories. So, I decided to see if I could find the plant and it turns out that there is a high resolution (unlike Poland) on those pictures. Evidently the high resolution swath for the plant was added this year, the 20th anniversary of the tragedy.
I was home in the U.S. last summer, so I am honestly thankful that we can spend the summer here this year without much traveling. My big craving for home right now is baseball. Some of that is being fulfilled with MLB.TV, but I would also love to spend a considerable amount of time playing it this summer here in Poland.
Can you help me out?
I forgot to look at Chernobyl last night but was going all over the place again. Even noticed that N. Korea has some pretty good resolution...that was surprising. What's up with Poznan??!!
I think I might be able to come up with something to help with your baseball needs! :-)
